Mulvaney strikes me as an uninvolved, “tough” father figure who thinks he’s doing his family a favor. While speaking about the Whitehouse’s budget proposal, Mulvaney said, “We’re no longer measuring compassion by the number of people who are on welfare.” If he, the Whitehouse, or Republican politicians had any compassion at all, they’d see that a proper solution would involve helping people stay off welfare in a sustainable fashion. Welfare is a necessary safety net, but it’s also a symptom.
